Montague Paratrooper Military Bike

Once in a while, a product crosses my path that make me think, “What a great idea- why didn’t I think of that?” The Montague Paratrooper Military Bike is a prime example. It is durable enough to handle any terrain, can move at high speeds, requires little maintenance and can fold small enough to easily transport but unfolds in seconds. The Paratrooper was originally designed for use by the military, and Montague thought it could also be a great tool for hunters who wanted an alternative to ATVs.

The beauty of the rugged, 24-speed mountain bike is that by removing the wheel and turning one quick release lever, it folds away in less than 30 seconds into a 3x3-foot pack for easy transportation. When erected, it can be coupled with a tow-trailer or rack for transporting gear or game.

It sounded like a hunter’s dream, so we decided to put it to the test on the trails of the Santa Monica Mountains. I found the bike very light and easy to assemble; with the front wheel removed it even fit easily into my little Volkswagen. It took me about five minutes to reassemble the bike, but I am sure that that would be shortened with practice. The bike handled the steep trails with ease, whether I was riding over rocky terrain or through the brush. I was surprised at how effortless gear changes were and how simple it was to ride. A compass conveniently located on the handlebars ensured that I found my way home.
My only grievance was that the seat is very narrow and uncomfortable, but that can be replaced.

The Montague Paratrooper comes in olive-drab green or black and has a suggested retail of $649.99. Montague Corporation, 800/736-5348, www.montagueusa.com.
