H2 accessory bike gets high marks

If it goes with a Hummer, it better be tough.

That seems to be the thought process behind the Hummer Tactical Mountain Bike, designed by Montague USA Corp.

Originally created for the Marine Corps, the bike is available for purchase (for about $800) as an accessory for the Hummer.

Montague claims the bike is “rugged enough to drop…from a military aircraft,” but its most interesting feature is that it folds for storage.

With just one quick release, the bike can be folded into a 3-by-3-foot size and tossed in the back of the H2.

“It’s very easy to assemble and disassemble,” said Marine Cpl. Devon Williams, a traffic management operations specialist stationed with the Ceremonial Platoon at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. “Everything’s snap and lock.”

Williams, a motorcyclist and avid mountain-bike rider, put the bike through its paces on Quantico’s hills and wooded trails.

It’s a good system,” he said. “The suspension absorbed nearly all the shock in the front.”
Williams gave the braking and gear-shifting systems high marks, as well.

“When you’re switching gears, you barely feel it,” he said. “You hear the click, but you don’t feel the jerk from the gears shifting.”

The bike’s only downside, he said, was the company’s biggest selling point – its size.
“I’d make it just a little larger,” he said. “It’s a nice size now, but you still have to make a lot of seat adjustments, especially if you’re tall.”
